The secret language of paint colors: a beginner's guide

Christian and I wanted to brighten our home with an off-white. Sounds simple. However, when we stepped into the world of off-whites, we soon discovered a hidden universe of subtle hues and tricky undertones. I realized undertones are the real MVPs of paint colors, and picking the right one is a game of hide-and-seek.

Undertones and how they work:

Although you may be able to identify some undertones by sight alone, such as those that differentiate a pinkish white from a brownish white, many are more difficult to spot.

A color wheel specifically designed to help identify the undertones of different skin tones. The wheel is divided into 8 sections, each representing a different undertones.

What are undertones?

  • Undertones are like hidden whispers within a color, affecting its overall mood and character. They're subtle hints of another color peeking through the dominant shade, like a secret ingredient that subtly alters the entire flavor.
  • Every paint color, except primary colors and pure white, is a mixture of different pigments. This blending of pigments creates the dominant color you perceive (called the mass tone or overtone), but it leaves traces of other colors - these are the undertones.

Why are undertones important?

  • Undertones significantly impact how a paint color interacts with light and the surrounding environment. They influence whether a color feels warm (reds, oranges, browns, golds, beige, and creamy whites) or cool (blues, greens, purples, grays, silvers, and whites with grey undertones). Warm colors tend to bring positivity and energy to the spaces they occupy, while cool colors like blue can inspire a sense of calm and relaxation.
  • Choosing the wrong undertone can clash with existing elements in your space, making it feel off-balance or uncomfortable. For example, a cool-toned grey with blue undertones could make a north-facing room feel even colder.

How to identify undertones:

  • Observe the paint swatch in different lighting conditions. Look for hints of other colors shifting beneath the main shade. Natural light reveals undertones more accurately than artificial light. However, you'll still want to test your swatch in artificial light as you will notice the color change.
  • Compare the paint swatches to similar colors. Hold it next to other shades within the same color family and see if one seems cooler or warmer.
  • Look for online resources and paint manufacturer guides that often list the undertones of their paint colors.
  • Before committing, paint sample squares on your walls and have a watch party throughout the day. Their true colors come out in different light.

Understanding undertones helps you:

  • Create harmonious color palettes: The balance or imbalance of warm and cool tones can completely transform a space, even one built on neutral palettes.
  • Set the mood in your space: Warm undertones can add coziness and energy, while cool undertones can evoke calmness and serenity.
  • Avoid unexpected surprises: By knowing the undertones, you can anticipate how the paint color will look in your specific space and avoid unwanted surprises after painting.

Remember, undertones are subtle but powerful players in the world of paint. Mastering their secrets opens up a new level of color artistry, allowing you to create harmonious and inviting spaces that perfectly reflect your desired atmosphere.
