Hacking our dining light installation

We were excited to upgrade our dining room light fixture, but as with most DIY projects, there was a setback.

Hacking our dining light installation

Replacing the barn wood flush mount in our dining room started with excitement. We wanted a centerpiece that would be a focal point, grounding the room and tying everything together. After browsing countless options, we finally found "the one" – a simple but elegant metal linear chandelier. But with all DIY projects, things rarely go according to plan. (Spoiler alert: they rarely do in our house.) What started as a quick and exciting swap quickly morphed into a headache. The new dining light, while gorgeous, refused to cooperate when it came to the final installation step – screwing on the cover plate. The pre-drilled holes wouldn't align, no matter how we wrangled it

I rarely see Christian get irritated. He's the calm, collected one between the two of us. But this misaligned cover plate was about to push him over the edge. As an engineer, Christian analyzes the design of everything, and this light was added to his shit list. However, there's also no one more determined and resourceful than him.

Faced with two options – drilling new holes in the fixture or returning the light – Christian chose to drill into the metal fixture with only a hand drill. It wasn't exactly a walk in the park. But after several attempts, he finally made it work.

After a minor detour, Christian proudly calls this our "custom-made" light. And despite the headache, we love this light and get tons of compliments on it from friends and family.
